Manifesto 2.0
1. If a large corporation were to go out of business, causing severe problems of unemployment and greatly disrupting the market, should the federal government subsidize them?
Yes, I believe we should help the business but only under certain circumstances. If the business is substantial to our economy then I believe we should give them subsidies to keep them afloat till the business can get on their feet again. This could help save the business, and prevent the loss of many jobs. Yet, if the business has a bad reputation, and is at fault for the failing of the company I believe they should not be given subsidies. However, if this is the case, I believe the civilians who do work for the company should receive some sort of compensation. It also depends on how much debt the business is submerged in, we need to be careful with our money especially at the rate the debt clock is ticking. I feel like the best option would be to give the company subsidies, but only if it was proven by economist they would not fail yet again. Letting the company fall into debt, and be forced to lay off all of their employees would make our economy even worse.
2. After looking at the 2011 budget (revenues & expenditures links), my manifesto leads me to CRITICIZE it because...
It’s obvious we the United States have a problem. Our national debt clock is always increasing, every year we are sinking 1.3 trillion dollars into debt, EVERY YEAR. I’ve reviewed the revenue and expenditure pie charts and I believe that we need to reevaluate how we are spending our money. There needs to be some way we can turn our debt clock around. Other than the fact that we are massively in debt, I do support using money for our defense system. As of social security, I feel like we need to stabilize the system, it doesn't comfort me knowing that we are paying for social security, yet my generation probably won’t even reap the benefits of it when the system is diminished and were all elders. Another issue I have with the government spending is the 646 billion dollars we are spending in the discretionary section of the pie chart, If I’m giving money to our government I would like to know where it is going. In conclusion, I feel like our government needs to learn a new approach to saving money. We are spending more money than we actually have, so to actually save we need to find ways to cut out spending in certain areas.
3. In keeping with my manifesto and after watching the movie I.O.U.S.A. explain the debt crisis faced by our nation, I propose the following solution...
After watching I.O.U.S.A., I propose that the government make cuts to many of the sections of spending. Earning money instead of spending it is going to be very ruff, especially since we are already drowning in debt! We could cut many programs we have, including social security. I also believe to make money back we are going to have to tax people, It wouldn’t be desirable, especially since we already pay so much in taxes but I feel there is no other way. If we put a small Value added tax on all products, consumers would learn good ethics of saving money rather than spending it, just like what our government needs to learn! I feel like one thing we SHOULDN’T be doing is borrowing money from other countries, this could cause conflicts and lead to a war. All of my propositions are going to take time, and they arn’t going to make us Americans happy, but I feel like to save money this is the only way.
